Gordon's friends call him an accident magnet. For his birthday, his best friend Re names a star after him. She believes this is a present he can't break... but she’s wrong. This funny, charming short film explores fantasy in a quirky and inventive way. It examines the challenges we face in teen years, discovering who our real friends are while hopefully not screwing things up.
Nathaniel Oliveri wrote the screenplay for Gordon's Star after a short conversation with Miguel Zaragoza one afternoon when trying to come up with a short film idea for their Foundation Diploma course at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) - Moore Park campus. Gordon's Star is the result of a joke they both came up with that day. Pre-production soon followed whilst Nathaniel continued to develop the script having written multiple drafts. Miguel helped with script editing. Production took place in late 2009. A very rough cut was completed in December 2009 for the AFTRS end of year screenings but post-production ran well into 2010. Nathaniel did the editing and composed, performed and recorded (with Hayley Meyer on piano) the original score for the film. The visual effects were done by both Nathaniel and Miguel.

Whilst the film was developed and produced at AFTRS with the aid of their fantastic lecturers and staff, this film is not categorised as a student film as the copyright ownership of all 2009 Foundation Diploma films have been released by the school back to its Foundation Diploma students. 2009 was the inaugral year of the Foundation Diploma course. Gordon's Star was filmed with a Canon 5D mark II DSLR camera primarily using an EF 24-70mm 1:2.8 L series USM Canon lens. Sound was recorded primarily using a Rode NTG-1 shotgun microphone into an H4 Zoom digital recorder.
Editing was done on Apple Final Cut Pro with compositing done using Apple Motion as well as Adobe After Effects and Adobe Photoshop. 3D digital elements were created in Autodesk Maya. Colour grading was done with Apple Color. Apple Soundtrack Pro was used for sound editing.
